The community garden was originally developed by community residents who wanted to provide a place for apartment dwellers to grow their own gardens, while providing them with an opportunity to meet fellow residents with horticultural interests.
The garden is located in the northeast “corner” of Sunnyside. There are 32 plots, each leased for $50 (plus an HSCA membership) for the season between Apr. 1 and Oct. 31. No chemical fertilizers or pesticides may be used in the Community Garden.
As some gardeners already know, the garden eligibility guidelines will be strictly adhered to this year. If the eligibility guidelines are not adhered to the City has the option of turning over management of the garden to another entity.
The eligibility priority for garden plots are as follows:
- Residents of Hillhurst-Sunnyside who don’t have access to garden space and had a plot last year;
- Residents who don’t have access to garden space and did not have a plot last year;
- Residents who have access to a garden but want a plot in the garden and had a plot last year;
- Residents who have access to a garden but want a plot in the garden and did not have a plot last year;
- People who live outside the community, don’t have access to a garden and had a plot last year;
- People who live outside the community, don’t have access to a garden and did not have a plot last year;
- People who live outside the community, have access to garden and had a plot last year;
- Lastly, people who live outside the community, have access to a garden and did not have a plot last year.
