What to do about that empty space?

This Wall needs a Makeover!

Have you ever walked, cycled, skated or passed by the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Association Centre and said to yourself  ”Wow – that place could sure use some colour!”? Well, I’ve been saying that for a while now, and I’ve finally got around to doing something about it…

That’s why today I’m calling for recruits to form the HSCA Community Mural Task Force! Whether you’re 12 or 112, we need your input and ideas on what could go up on this wall and how to get it done. Ultimately, this will be the first major step towards a multi-phase project to revitalize the HSCA Centre’s front courtyard area (to reclaim this as a people space) – and it’s my hope that the mural will serve as THE symbol for this campaign of renewal.

As a former resident of the Triwood Area, I’ve been a proponent of community murals ever since the Brentwood Community Association decided to revitalize two similar ‘dead spaces’ along Northmount Drive NW (around 2004-2005). Below are some examples of murals that can be found throughout the Triwood Area.

Mural on Brisebois Dr. & Northmount Dr. NW - Depicting Nose Hill

Mural on Charleswood Dr. & Northmount Dr. NW - Depicting the Community

Mural on the side of Eurotech Cycle & Sport on Northmount near 14th Street NW

So, do you think we can do it here in Hillhurst-Sunnyside? Do you have some ideas on how to do it? Do you know an artist (beginner or professional, doesn’t matter what level) that you think might want to help? Do you have a passion for community murals like I do? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, then I’d like to hear from you!!!

Please Contact me – James Michi, Executive Director of the HSCA at hsca_exec@msn.com or call me at 403-283-0554 ext. 221  I plan to hold an HSCA Community Mural Task Force meeting sometime in June to brainstorm ideas and to get the ball wall rolling!

    Hi,
You might want to talk to the good folks at Urban Youth Worx… sounds like you’re not doing quite the same thing, but they would likely have some ideas. They have a fb group.

  • Thanks – we’ll need all the help we can get..

    Hi Jay,
I’m an amateur artist and have always wanted to paint a wall! I can help, although I don’t have a lot of time….

    Cheers,
    Tamara

Super Tamara! I’ll be submitting an article for the July issue of VOICE, and as soon as we have a small but committed group of interested individuals, I’ll call a meeting.

I’m in the midst of writing a grant proposal to get financial support going as soon as possible. But it’s such a great project that the grant basically writes itself!

  • Update – I met with the good people of Urban Youth Worx yesterday and they are on board! Thanks sdflkj:sdf!

    Hi J!
I would like to help out as well! I’m also an artist and would love to work on a mural! You’re writing a proposal for financial support would that be for supplies or would that also include honorariums for the artists? Either keep me posted, I’m interested in this project. Thanks!

  • Hey Hannah – could you send me an email hsca_exec@msn.com
