Vitalization Committee Update - LRT

The issue of the triangular green spaces east of the LRT tracks has become an item of discussion at recent Vitalization Committee meetings.

The Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Association Vitalization Committee shares the concerns of community members about the sad state of the triangular parks east of the Sunnyside C-Train tracks and especially the ‘gazebo park’ adjacent to the Sunnyside station. When the C-Train was first completed, these parks were well-maintained by the City and a welcome stop for commuters, walkers and joggers, but they have sadly been allowed to fall into a state of complete disregard and disrepair. The Vitalization Committee would like to remedy this shameful neglect by pressuring the City to properly maintain the area, especially the gazebo park, which is a gateway to Hillhurst-Sunnyside for commuters. Below are the issues that need to be addressed. If you share our concerns, call the City (3-1-1) and let them know.

With plans to expand the Sunnyside C-Train stop to accommodate four-car trains, we recognize that major development and improvement of the area in line with what’s called for in the Area Redevelopment Plan and the Transit Oriented Development Plan will not take place until that work is finished. However, immediately and in the meantime, the following issues need to be addressed:
1) General, ongoing, consistent maintenance (e.g. grass cutting, watering, trash removal, pruning, etc.)
2) Installation of pigeon-deterrent screening/spikes in the gazebo
3) Replanting of snow-on-the-mountain, or other plants, on the slope in front of gazebo
4) Reinstalling the bench in the gazebo
5) Removal of the chain-link fence, except for the portion separating the park from the house to the east
6) Provision for collection of cigarette butts
7) Installation of additional lighting as security and safety measures
