In 2010 the Alberta government is planning to implement a new drug strategy which will ultimately create a common program and approach to drug converage. Currently there are five different ministries providing prescription drug programs with different eligibility rules. Drug coverage for seniors will be redesigned. The basic philosophy is to move from a system where all seniors receive the same coverage (paying 30% to a maximum of $25.00 per prescription) to a system geared to income. A co-payment or deductible will be charged where income falls within the guidelines. The lowest-income seniors will not pay for drug coverage – no co-payment at all will be required for approximately 44% of single seniors (63,000) and 38% of couples (49,000).
Single seniors with income over $21,325 and senior families over $42,650 (as shown on line 150 of the tax return) will pay a deductible. Seniors will be required to pay the full cost of prescriptions until they reach their deductible. Once the deductible is reached, the full cost will be covered by the government.
