A New Place for Play!

At the Annual General Meeting on April 4, 2011, we made the big announcement that HSCA has been selected as a recipient of a KaBOOM! playground grant. KaBOOM! (www.kaboom.rog) is an US-based charity that works with communities to build playgrounds. Their model is both simple and revolutionary; they partner with organizations who want to help build playgrounds and then act as a point of contact for any group who need a playground but are short the $100,000 – $150,000 required to get started.  KaBOOM! believes in harnessing the power of community to build their playgrounds. They state on their website that “the process of organizing a community-built playground is just as important as the playground itself; that a community group that has successfully built a new playground is more likely to take action on other issues affecting their community.” They also believe in expediency, which is why all KaBOOM! playgrounds are scheduled to be built by approximately 200 volunteers on a single day! Our day, by the way will be Saturday, June 18, 2011!

But before all that, we do have another day that we need all interested folk to attend. We will be hosting a “Design Day” on Wednesday, April 20th from 4pm till 8pm at the community centre (in the Social Hall). Our KaBOOM! Project Manager, Kenny, will be on hand to work with kids and parents to plan and to envision what the playground might look like. We really hope for a good turnout on Design Day as it will be the last big planning session before the actual Build Day on June 18th!

Try Sportball and Have Fun!

Did you know that Sportball runs their popular programs for children at the Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Centre?

Sportball offers non-competitive sports instruction for children 16 months – 12 years old. Kids are introduced to 8 popular sports: soccer, hockey, basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, golf & football. Using developmentally appropriate methods to introduce, practice and refine gross motor skills. The programs reinforce the benefits of teamwork and skills development rather than the importance of winning, enabling children to gain the confidence and develop the social skills necessary to succeed in sport and life. Hillhurst Sunnyside Out of School Program!

We’d like to introduce you to the Hillhurst Sunnyside Out of School Care Program, more commonly know as OOSC.  For any of you are not familiar with us, we are a fully licensed before and after-school program operating out of the Community Association.  We are open Mondays through Fridays and currently licensed to take up to 56 elementary school children, Grades 1 to 6.

Here at OOSC we aim to create a program where the individual needs of all our children can be met through a wide variety of creative, educational and recreational activities.  In recognizing each child as an individual we attempt to offer as diverse a range of activities as possible, so that developmental needs of each individual child can be met on a daily basis.  Through these choices we hope to enhance the physical, social, intellectual, creative and emotional wellbeing of our children in a safe and secure environment where they feel they have the room to grow and flourish.
