Art in the Community: The Hillhurst Sunnyside Pancake Eaters!

Pancake Eaters PaintingIf you’ve visited the Hearth Room in the Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Centre, you will have noticed a rather large painting depicting a family sitting down to a pancake breakfast. Recently, there was some discussion by HSCA Board members regarding this painting in the context of how it would fit into a proposed future redesign of the Hearth Room and also, how this painting ended up being displayed at the Centre. After some investigation the following story unfolded…

We are now a recycling depot for used and unwanted CELL PHONES, PRINT & TONER CARTRIDGES and DIGITAL CAMERAS.

By recycling with the Think Recycle program, unwanted electronics will be refurbished, recycled or reused, creating a positive environmental impact and preventing these items from being dumped in landfills. Also, for every 24 qualifying electronics turned in, one tree is planted through Tree Canada. Everyone wins when we recycle!

Please consider recycling your items here at the HSCA! We have two recycling containers located right inside the front doors for your convenience.

New Open Community Space on 10 Street

Kensington InteractiveThe Kensington Interaction is an open community space for us to talk with each other.  A space for the physical sharing of art & ideas with no strings attached.  The Interaction is located in the middle of Kensington on 10th Street and has been running since September 2010.  Contributions have included recipes, drawings, stories, comics, poems, leaf creations, gifts, music and more.  Half of the Interaction is a cork board that will also include chalkboard and is open to the public 24/7.  The other half is a locked display area that allows for a crafted and protected presentation.

The Kensington Interaction is free to use and we welcome anyone interested in displaying both on the cork board and in the display area.  There are a few simple guidelines.  Anything posted should be constructive, respectful and ad free.  If you take a posting then please replace it with something else.

You can see an ever growing collection of pictures from the Interaction at KensingtonInteraction.tumblr.com.

This project was privately funded and is the result of quite a few community members volunteering their time, money & energy.  A strong and vibrant community is crucial to a better life. More constructive interaction breeds understanding, respect, connection and a stronger, more vibrant community. By creating real world opportunities for understanding and positive interaction we hope these aspects of Sunnyside and Hillhurst will strengthen further.

If you have any questions or you are interested in exhibiting in the display cases, please contact ConstructivEthos@gmail.com. Donations to support the project and ongoing maintenance of same are being accepted.
Make cheques payable to HSCA and direct it to the Hilllhurst Hardware project.  Charitable receipts upon request.

The Big Question

“What does a Community Association really do?” Typically when people ask this question, they’ll often preface it with what they already know about Community Associations: the renting out of hall space and the maintenance of facilities like outdoor pools and gymnasiums. Well, yes.  A lot of the Community Association’s business does revolve around those things. But to think of a Community Association as merely the operator of a Community Centre would be more than an oversimplification; it would be a fundamental misunderstanding of the role of the agency.
